Troubleshooting a Wireless Network Adapter


Windows XP

1. Click on the Start menu and click on the Run option.
2. When the "Run" window opens, input ncpa.cpl into the "Open" field then click on the OK button.
3. The "Network Connections" window will open, right click on the Wireless Network Connection icon and click on the Properties option.
4. When the "Wireless Network Connection Properties" window opens, click on the Wireless Networks tab and select the proper "Preferred Network" (what ever the SSID is on this network) and click on the Properties button.
5. When the "[SSID] Properties" window appears, please make sure that WEP/WPA is configured properly:
Not using WEP/WPA (default for all Linksys products)
 Make sure that Data encryption [WEP enabled] is un-checked or that "Data Encryption" is set to Disabled
 After this is done click on the OK button then click OK again on the "Wireless Network Connection Properties" window to save the settings.
Using WEP/WPA
• WEP:
o Make sure that The key is provided for me automatically is Unchecked
o If the above was checked, then re input the "Network key" (Referred to as "Key 1 on Linksys Access Points and Wireless Routers). If there is a "Confirm network key" field input the key again.
o Make sure that the "Network Authentication" is set to Open or unchecked (depending on what version of XP you have).
o After this is done click on the OK button then click OK again on the "Wireless Network Connection Properties" window to save the settings.

Windows 98SE/ME/2000

1. Go to the WLAN Monitor icon in the system tray. It should look similar to this icon.
 If it is not click on the Start menu, then pointing to Programs and looking for Wireless-B or Wireless-G to bring up the WLAN monitor manually
 if you do this and there is no "Wireless-B" or "Wireless-G" folders then Install the adapter again.
2. When the WLAN Monitor loads, click onto the Profiles tab.
3. When the "Profiles" area loads, click on the Default profile and click the Edit button. This will bring up the "Profile Wizard" confirm that the following settings are correct, and then clicking Next after each screen:
 SSID (linksys is the default SSID on Linksys Access Points)
 Wireless mode (should be Infrastructure with networks using an Access Point)
 WEP should be disabled by default, if not select the appropriate encryption level for the wireless network and input either "Key 1" or the "Passphrase" for the wireless network.
4. If prompted to "Confirm New Settings", click either Yes or Next.
5. When the "Congratulations" screen appears, click Activate new settings now.

Checking WEP Configuration of a Wireless adapter under Windows XP
Before doing this please be sure that WEP is either Enabled or Disabled on the Wireless Access Point or Wireless router. If unsure, please click on the appropriate link on the "Wireless" sub menu.
