Bismillah, praise be to Allah the creator that has no beginning and no end, and does not resemble the creations and does not need any of the creations, we ask Allah to raise the rank of Prophet Muhammad and his kind Aal and companions, Thereafter

Know that all the Muslims of Ahlus-Sunnah Wal-Jama^ah unanimously agreed that the Angel of Death is ^Azraeel (Peace be upon him).

Some misguided people such as the wahhabis deny that ^Azraeel is the name of the angel of Death, but that’s due to their extreme ignorance and opposition to the Ijma^ and al-Jama^ah, the majority of the ummah.

Among the proofs that ^Azraeel is the name of the angel of death is the following:

نَقل الإجماعَ على أنَّ اسمَ مَلَكِ الموت عَزْرائيلُ علَيه السلامُ أبو حَيَّانَ الأندلسيُ في “النهر المادّ” والحافظُ البيهقيُ في “البَعْث والنُّشُور” والقاضي عياض في كتاب “الشفا بتعريف حقوق المصطفى”.

Al-Bayhaqiy in his book a-Ba^th wan-Nushoor, al-Qadi ^iad in his book ash-Shafi, Abu Haiyan al-Andalusiy in his Tasfir An-Nahr al-Mad reported the Ijma^ (Scholarly consensus) that the angel of death ^azraeel.

وقد وَرَد أنَّ اسمَ مَلَكِ الموت عَزْرائيلُ في حَديثٍ رواه الحافظ الطبرانيُ في “الطِّوَالات” والحافظ البيهقيُ في حديث الصُّور.

Also at-Tabaraniy in “Tiwalat” and al-Bayhaqiy in “Hadith as-Soor” narrated a hadith of the Prophet (Sallallahu ^Alayhi Wa Sallam) where the name of ^Azraeel was mentioned. Even Ibn Taymiah the forefather of the wahhabi sect, agreed to that, yet his followers the wahhabis still deny this and oppose their leader and oppose the ummah.

Likewise In al-Jami^ imam al-Qurtubiy reported this in his Tafseer that ^Azraeel is the name of the angel of death:

وفي الجامع لأحكام القرءان، للإمام القرطبي، في تفسير سورة السجدة، الآية 11:

﴿قُلْ يَتَوَفَّاكُم مَلَكَ المَوْتِ الذِي وُكِّلَ بَكُمْ ثُمَّ إلَى رَبِّكُم تُرْجَعُونَ﴾، ما نَصُّه:

“قولُه تعالى: ﴿قُلْ يَتَوَفَّاكُم مَلَكَ المَوْتِ﴾ لَمَّا ذَكَرَ استِبْعادَهُم للبَعث ذَكَرَ تَوَفِّيْهِم وأنّه يُعِيدُهم.”

وقال: “يقال: تَوَفَّاهُ اللهُ أي اسْتَوْفَى رُوْحَه ثُم قَبَضَه. وَتَوَفَّيْتُ مَالي مِن فُلانٍ أي اسْتَوْفَيْتُهُ. ﴿مَلَكَ المَوْتِ﴾ واسْمُهُ عَزْرائيلُ وَمَعْناهُ عَبْدُ اللهِ كَمَا تَقَدَّمَ في “البَقَرة”. وَتَصَرُّفُه كُلُّه بأمْرِ اللهِ تَعالى وَبِخَلْقِهِ واخْتِراعِهِ” اهـ.

Also as-Suyutiy reported that ^Azraeel is the name of the angel of death:

وفي الدُّرّ المَنْثُور في التفسير بالمأثور، للإمام جلال الدين السيوطي، في تفسير سورة السجدة ما نَصُّه:

“وأَخْرَجَ ابنُ أبي الدُّنْيا وأبو الشَّيْخِ فِي “العَظَمَة” عَن أشْعَثَ بنِ شُعَيْبٍ رَضِي الله عنه قالَ: سَأَلَ إبراهيمُ عَلَيه السلامُ مَلَكَ الموتِ واسمُهُ عَزْرائيلُ” اهـ.

Imam al-Munawiy also reported that ^Azraeel is the name of the angel of death

وفي فيض القدير شرح الجامع الصغير، للإمامِ المنَاوِي، في الجزء الثالث [تابع حرف الهمزة] ما نَصُّه:

“ومِنْ أكابِرِ المَلائِكَةِ إسْرافِيلُ وعَزْرائيلُ علَيهِما السلامُ والأخبارُ كَثِيرَةٌ دَلَّتْ عَلَيْهِما وَثَبَتَ أنَّ عَزْرائيلُ علَيه السلامُ مَلكُ المَوت.

al-Bajuriy also reported that ^Azraeel is the name of the angel of death

وفي شرح جوهرة التوحيد، لإبراهيم الباجُوري ص88:

“وَوَاجِبٌ إيمانُنَا بالموتِ *** ويَقْبِضُ الرُّوْحَ رَسُولُ الموتِ

“ويَقْبِضُ الرُّوحَ رَسُولُ المَوْتِ”: أيْ يُخْرِجُها مِن مَقَرِّها المَلَكُ المُوكَلُ بالمَوْتِ وهو عَزْرائيلُ عليه السلام” اهـ.
