Praise be to Alla<\/span>h and may Alla<\/span>h increase the honor and raise the rank of our Master Muh<\/span>ammad s<\/span>allalla<\/span>hu ^alayhi wa sallam.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Know, may Alla<\/span>h have mercy upon you, that it is recommended (sunnah) for the pilgrim and for other than the pilgrim to go to Madi<\/span>nah, the city of guidance, to visit the grave of the best creation and the Master of the Children of A<\/span>dam Prophet Muh<\/span>ammad s<\/span>allalla<\/span>hu ^alayhi wa sallam.<\/p>\n

The Messenger of Alla<\/span>h s<\/span>allalla<\/span>hu ^alayhi wa sallam said:<\/p>\n

It means: \u201cThe one who visits my grave will earn my intercession.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

This h<\/span>adi<\/span>th was narrated by Ha<\/span>fidh<\/span> Taq<\/span>iyyuddi<\/span>n as-Subkiyy. Also Ad-Da<\/span>ra Q<\/span>ut<\/span>niyy and al-Bazza<\/span>r narrated it and classified it as a h<\/span>adi<\/span>th s<\/span>ahih<\/span> that was related by the son of ^Umar.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Visiting the grave of Prophet Muh<\/span>ammad s<\/span>allalla<\/span>hu ^alayhi wa sallam is a sunnah (recommended deed) by the consensus of all the scholars of the schools (madha<\/span>hib) of the Sha<\/span>fi^iyy, the H<\/span>anafiyy, the Ma<\/span>likiyy, the H<\/span>anbaliyy.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

This sunnah applies to the people of Madi<\/span>nah and also to those who are living elsewhere. It is among the great deeds that are accepted by Alla<\/span>h.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Those who deny the legitimacy of visiting the grave for the traveler with that very intention should be ignored. It is not permissible for someone to follow their path, for they have deviated.        <\/span><\/p>\n

It is recommended for the visitor to perform two rak^ahs Tah<\/span>iyyatul-Masjid (Greeting the mosque). He would then head to the honored grave, he should face the grave standing at a distance of four cubits out of respect while turning his eyes away with a heart full of aggrandizing the Prophet s<\/span>allalla<\/span>hu ^alayhi wa sallam. Then he will say:<\/p>\n

\u201cAs-sala<\/span>mu ^alayka ya<\/span> Rasu<\/span>lalla<\/span>h, as-sala<\/span>mu ^alayka ya<\/span> Nabiyyalla<\/span>h, as-sala<\/span>mu ^alayka ya<\/span> khi<\/span>ratalla<\/span>h, as-sala<\/span>mu ^alayka ya h<\/span>abiballa<\/span>h, as-sala<\/span>mu ^alayka ya<\/span> s<\/span>afwatalla<\/span>h , <\/em><\/p>\n

as-sala<\/span>mu ^alayka ya<\/span> Sayyidal-Mursali<\/span>n wa Kha<\/span>taman-Nabiyyi<\/span>n, as-sala<\/span>mu ^alayka ya<\/span> khayral-khalaq<\/span>i ajma^i<\/span>n, as-Sala<\/span>mu ^alayka ya qa<\/span>\u2019idal-ghurril-muh<\/span>ajali<\/span>n, as-sala<\/span>mu ^alayka wa ^ala<\/span> A<\/span>lika wa Ahli baytika wa azwa<\/span>jika wa As<\/span>–ha<\/span>bika at<\/span>–t<\/span>ayibi<\/span>n at<\/span>–t<\/span>ahiri<\/span>n, <\/em><\/p>\n

as-sala<\/span>mu ^alayka wa ^ala<\/span> sa<\/span>\u2019ir-lanbiya<\/span>\u2019i wal mursali<\/span>n<\/em>.”<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

He should keep on saying the S<\/span>ala<\/span>h ^alan-Nabiyy while he is still in that spot.<\/p>\n

The one who says: “As-sala<\/span>mu ^alayka ya<\/span> Rasu<\/span>lalla<\/span>h” then moves one cubit to the right to say sala<\/span>m (salutation) to Abu<\/span> Bakr may Alla<\/span>h raise his rank, then moves the same distance to say sala<\/span>m to al-Fa<\/span>ruq<\/span> ^Umar too may Alla<\/span>h raise his rank, then moves to his first place the he would have done the sala<\/span>m as it should be.<\/p>\n

After that he makes supplication to Alla<\/span>h by the virtue of the Messenger of Alla<\/span>h s<\/span>allalla<\/span>hu ^alayhi wa sala<\/span>m, and ask his God to grant him the intercession of the Prophet s<\/span>allalla<\/span>hu ^alayhi wa sala<\/span>m. He would then direct his chest towards the Q<\/span>iblah and make supplication for himself and to whomever he wants. If somebody had asked him to pass his sala<\/span>m<\/p>\n

Ima<\/span>m Ma<\/span>lik, the great scholar of al-Madi<\/span>nah al-Munawwarah said to the Caliph al-Mansu<\/span>r when he went to H<\/span>ajj and visited the grave of the Prophet s<\/span>allalla<\/span>hu ^alayhi wa sallam and asked him: \u201cOh Aba<\/span> ^Abdilla<\/span>h, shall I direct my chest towards the Q<\/span>iblah and<\/em> make supplication (du^a<\/span>\u2019) to Alla<\/span>h, or shall I direct my chest towards the Messenger of Alla<\/span>h s<\/span>allalla<\/span>hu ^alayhi wa sallam <\/em>?\u201d. The great scholar Imam Ma<\/span>lik said: \u201cWhy would you turn your face away from him and he is your mean and the mean of your father A<\/span>dam peace be upon him. Direct your chest towards him and ask Alla<\/span>h to make the Prophet intercede for you<\/em>.\u201d This was narrated by Qadi<\/span> ^Iyad<\/span> in his book ash-Shifa<\/span>.<\/p>\n

As to what Ima<\/span>m Ma<\/span>lik said: \u201cI dislike to be said: \u2018I visited the grave of the Prophet\u2019.<\/em>\u201d The people of his school (madh-hab) explained it that he hated to use the word \u201cgrave<\/em>\u201d out of politeness but rather he preferred to say: \u201cI visited the Prophet.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

Ima<\/span>m an-Nawawiyy said in his book \u201cal-Mana<\/span>sik\u201d about the visit of the grave of the Prophet s<\/span>allalla<\/span>hu ^alayhi wa sallam: \u201cWhether on his way or not, the visit of the Prophet is among the most important good deeds; and the most benefiting means and wishes.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

Ha<\/span>fidh<\/span> as-Sam^a<\/span>niyy mentioned that Ima<\/span>m ^Aliyy may Alla<\/span>h raise his rank said: \u201cAn Arab man came to us three days after we have buried the Messenger of Alla<\/span>h s<\/span>allalla<\/span>hu ^alayhi wa sallam, he threw himself on the grave of the Prophet and put some soil of the grave on his head. A<\/span>yah 64 of Su<\/span>rat an-Nisa<\/span>\u2019 means if the Muslim sinners were to cause injustice to themselves by sinning, they would come to you (Muh<\/span>ammad), and ask for forgiveness from Alla<\/span>h; then the Messenger will ask Alla<\/span>h to forgive them, they will find out that Alla<\/span>h grants repentance and that He has an abundance (great plenty) of mercy for the believers].<\/em><\/p>\n
