We start with the Name of Allah. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds, and may Allah raise the rank of our Master Muhammad, and protect his nation from what he fears for it.<\/p>\n

Brothers and sisters in Islam, Allah Said in Su<\/span>ratun-Nisa<\/span>\u2019, A<\/span>yah<\/strong><\/em> 64<\/em>:<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/strong><\/p>\n

This Aya<\/span>h means:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201c <\/em>If when they are unjust to themselves, they come to you and ask Alla<\/span>h<\/em> for forgiveness, and the Messenger asks forgiveness for them, Alla<\/span>h<\/em> will forgive them and have mercy upon them.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

There is consensus <\/strong><\/span>among the scholars that it is sunnah <\/em><\/span><\/strong>to visit the grave of the Prophet, sallAllahu ^alayhi wa sallam<\/em>, both for he who lives in al-Madinah <\/em>and he who travels there for the express purpose of visiting the Prophet\u2019s grave, and doing so is a great act of obedience. Qadi<\/span><\/em> ^Iyad<\/span><\/em> and an-Nawawiyy<\/em> both reported the scholarly consensus (Ijma<\/span>^)<\/em> on this issue.<\/p>\n

It is sunnah<\/strong><\/span> <\/em>for the visitor to also have the intention to travel to pray in the mosque of the Prophet.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Hence, visiting his grave is by consensus a sunnah<\/em><\/strong>. This is due to several religious proofs. One of them is the h<\/span>adi<\/span>th:<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

It means: \u201cThe one who visits my grave has earned my intercession.\u201d<\/strong> This h<\/span>adi<\/span>th is narrated by ad- Da<\/span>raq<\/span>ut<\/span>niyy and classified as \u201ch<\/span>asan for other than itself\u201d (h<\/span>asan lighayrih).<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

The false<\/span><\/strong> claim of Ibn Taymiyah<\/em><\/strong><\/span> that it is forbidden for one to travel with the purpose of visiting the grave of the prophet, is a matter that does not comply with the rules of the religion.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Ibn Taymiyah misinterpreted the h<\/span>adi<\/span>th of the Prophet, narrated by al-Bukha<\/span>riyy:<\/p>\n

\u0644\u0627 \u062a\u064f\u0634\u062f\u0651\u064f \u0627\u0644\u0631\u062d\u0627\u0644 \u0625\u0644\u0627 \u0625\u0644\u0649 \u062b\u0644\u0627\u062b\u0629 \u0645\u0633\u0627\u062c\u062f: \u0645\u0633\u062c\u062f\u064a \u0647\u0630\u0627\u060c \u0648\u0645\u0633\u062c\u062f \u0627\u0644\u062d\u0631\u0627\u0645\u060c \u0648\u0645\u0633\u062c\u062f \u0627\u0644\u0623\u0642\u0635\u0649<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Due to his ill <\/strong><\/span>understanding of this h<\/span>adi<\/span>th, Ibn Taymiyah claimed<\/strong><\/span> that it means that one is not<\/span> allowed to travel except to those three mosques: the Aqsa<\/span> Mosque, the Prophet\u2019s Mosque, and the H<\/span>ara<\/span>m Mosque (in Makkah).<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Based on that, he ruled that it is forbidden for one to travel to visit the grave of the Prophet. Ibn Taymiyah<\/strong><\/span>\u2019s claim breached<\/span><\/strong> the consensus of all the scholars who preceded him.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

The correct meaning of the h<\/span>adi<\/span>th is:<\/strong> \u201cOne ought not travel to a mosque with the purpose of praying in it, except if one was travelling to one of these three mosques: the Aqsa<\/span> Mosque, the Prophet\u2019s Mosque, and the H<\/span>ara<\/span>m Mosque in Makkah.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

This is so because the reward of praying is multiplied in these three mosques compared to the reward of praying in other mosques. This is a merit specific for those three mosques and not for any other mosque.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

What sheds clear light on the meaning of the h<\/span>adi<\/span>th is another narration of the same h<\/span>adi<\/span>th that explains the aforementioned one. Ima<\/span>m Ahmad narrated that the Prophet explicitly said<\/strong>: \u201cOne should not drive the animals in travelling towards a mosque with the purpose of praying in it, with the exception of the three mosques, the Aqsa<\/span> Mosque, the Prophet\u2019s Mosque, and the H<\/span>ara<\/span>m Mosque. This narration is very explicit in clarifying the meaning of the aforementioned h<\/span>adi<\/span>th, and it is in compliance with the consensus of the nation, contrary to the false claim of Ibn Taymiyah.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Moreover the Prophet, s<\/span>allalla<\/span>hu ^alayhi wa sallam, said:<\/strong> \u201cProphet ^I<\/span>sa<\/span> (Jesus) shall come down from the (second) heaven to Earth and rule Earth justly. Moreover, he will take a route between two mountains to make H<\/span>ajj or ^Umrah and come to my grave. He will say: As-Salamu^alaykum to me and I will respond to him.\u201d This h<\/span>adi<\/span>th is narrated by al-Ha<\/span>kim and Abu Da<\/span>wu<\/span>dat<\/span>–T<\/span>aya<\/span>lisiyy. Al Ha<\/span>kim, ha<\/span>fidh<\/span> adh-Dhahabiyy, and others classified it as a s<\/span>ahih<\/span> h<\/span>adi<\/span>th.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

This h<\/span>adi<\/span>th proves that travelling to visit the grave of the Prophet, s<\/span>allalla<\/span>hu ^alayhi wa sallam, is not sinful. On the contrary, this is what Prophet ^I<\/span>sa<\/span> will do. By this, it is very clear that no weight should be given to the deviated claim of Ibn Taymiyah.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Note:<\/strong> When one gets into the Prophet\u2019s Mosque, one makes two optional rak^ahs to salute the Mosque.<\/strong><\/p>\n


<\/strong><\/p>\n

Then, one stands politely facing the grave of the Prophet about four (4) cubits away from the wall, lowering one\u2019s gaze and filling one\u2019s heart with love and respect for the Prophet.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Then, one says with a medium voice: As-Sala<\/span>mu^alayka ya<\/span> Rasu<\/span>lalla<\/span>h; as-sala<\/span>mu^alayka ya<\/span> Nabiyyalla<\/span>h, and the like. Then, one makes as<\/span>–s<\/span>ala<\/span>h ^alan-Nabiyy.
<\/strong><\/p>\n

Afterwards, one goes about one cubit to the right and says as-sala<\/span>mu ^alayka ya<\/span> Aba<\/span> Bakrinis<\/span>–S<\/span>iddiq<\/span>, then one more cubit to the right and says as-sala<\/span>mu ^alayka ya<\/span> ^Umaral-Fa<\/span>ruq<\/span>.

Then one goes to where one first stood and makes du^a<\/span>\u2019 asking Alla<\/span>h by the Prophet.<\/p>\n


<\/strong><\/p>\n

One faces the Q<\/span>iblah and makes du^a<\/span>\u2019 for oneself and for whomever one wishes. If anyone requested of one to convey one\u2019s sala<\/span>m to the Prophet, one says: O Prophet of Alla<\/span>h, so and so gives you sala<\/span>m.<\/strong><\/p>\n
